The DeiC Conference 2024, held in Kolding, Denmark, gathered experts from Denmark and across Europe to explore advancements in digital research infrastructure under the theme, Collaboration on Digital Research Infrastructure for a Better Tomorrow. The conference offered an in-depth look at how interdisciplinary collaboration can drive progress in Data Management, network services, security, quantum computing, and high-performance computing (HPC).
Data Management and the SUBMERSE Project
In the Data Management track, a presentation was delivered on the SUBMERSE project which – as an ambitious collaboration that brings together experts from multiple fields – matched the conference’s title perfectly. Chris Atherton from GÉANT provided an insightful overview of SUBMERSE, highlighting how fibre sensing technology can serve diverse applications, from environmental monitoring to infrastructure security.
The true innovation of SUBMERSE lies in its collaborative nature: researchers and technical experts from various disciplines are bringing together knowledge to develop sophisticated solutions for real-time data sensing. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, the project requires a complex, structured ontology to unify data across its different research domains — a necessity Atherton emphasised as essential for advancing fibre sensing capabilities. An ontology is important for establishing robust frameworks that enable seamless data sharing and interpretation among diverse research communities.
Collaboration Across Tasks: Data Lifecycle and Ethics and Security
For the Danish participants of the SUBMERSE project, the conference served as a valuable platform to review ongoing efforts within two key tasks led by DeiC and NORDUnet: the Data Lifecycle Task and the Ethics and Security Task. The Data Lifecycle Task, responsible for creating comprehensive Data Management Plans, works closely with the Ethics and Security Task to ensure that data practices not only adhere to ethical standards but also enhance security across the data lifecycle. This alignment reflects DeiC’s commitment to promoting an integrated approach to Data Management that meets both ethical and operational standards.
